This traditional white-ground pottery called Fajalauza pottery is decorated with beautiful patterns in blue. Fajalauza is the gateway to the city wall of Granada that led to the traditional pottery neighborhood that was established here in the 16th century. It is the old Arab neighborhood, called Albaicin, which was outside the city walls, and today is the oldest neighborhood in the city. In 1994 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This type of ceramic art has existed for over 200 years. Fajalauza production remains almost the same to this day. After being manually turned on the potter's wheel, the pieces are fired, vitrified in a tin oxide bath and fired again. They are hand-painted and common motifs are flowers, vines, birds and pomegranates.
